Food insecurity in the world has reached epic proportions with as many as 1.7 billion people battling a daily war against hunger. Over 950 million people suffer from chronic malnutrition and 16,000 children die each year as a result of hunger. It is the most basic human rights violation in the world today.

Why is food insecurity such a problem on a global scale? Basic human rights include the right to adequate food and the United Nations has set up the Millennium Development Goals that include cutting the world’s hunger by half by the year 2015. Yet, today human rights are violated as hunger increases in the world.

Hunger in America has risen by 46 percent since 2006, with 26 million suffering from hunger on a domestic front. It is not only the homeless and the indigent who go hungry. Food banks battling hunger in America report that 37% of the food distributed goes to families with one person working a full time job. Hunger in America now affects one in eight people.

The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that only $30 billion per year, invested in farm production and infrastructure, could erase the base causes of food insecurity in the world by the year 2025.

Not only would the programs address food insecurity and hunger, they would eradicate them by promoting long term commitments and involvement in agriculture in developing third world countries, as well as developing countries introducing the small-scale farmers into markets and stopping the mandating of bio-fuels.

Countries and nations have an obligation to preserve human rights by respecting, protecting and fulfilling the need for adequate food for all people, directly if necessary, and appealing to global communities when they cannot provide this basic human right.

Globally, governments must be held accountable for any human rights violations when it pertains to keeping people free from hunger and food insecurity in the world. They must enact legislation that prevents starvation, ensures a basic social protection and prosecutes any human rights violation that occurs.

It is not always the politicians who are caring about world politics and worldwide problems like global warming. The conference on climate change in Copenhagen 2009 has shown once more that governments cannot solve all issues. Therefore, every single civilian has to take part in the fight against global warming and start with “small” things which might have a big effect later on.

In Rosenheim / Germany for example, a special event for all cyclist at a local mountainbike shop took place on the 26th of June. 25 young people, aged between 15 and 40 years, meet for a group ride against global warming. They wanted to show that the green house effect caused by high emissions of carbon dioxide is especially an issue for younger people, who will face this problem in the next decades. That is why more and more people are “pro cycling” and get on their mountainbike.

Starting from 1998 to 2007 every year ranks on top among the 25 warmest years, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA. That might be already one of several global warming effects and this dramatic rise in average temperature will have big impacts on all living things. Many of these changes have already begun.

More than 100.000 fires reported in 2006 and nearly 10 million acres burned. Heat waves contributed to the death of more than 225 people. In Wildlife polar bears are drowning as they have to swim much longer distances to reach ice floes. Glaciers are getting smaller and sea level is getting higher and higher every. Those are several more reasons to switch pro cycling to stop global warming and carbon (co 2) dioxide emissions.

But in spite of all these impacts, industry and politicians are not really willed to fight against this global problem: scientifically seen, the global warming effects can only hardly be proved. Politicians need to show their ability to solve problems in a shorter period of time, and the success against lessen the green house effect might be seen as early as in a few decades. At this Cycling and mountain-bike Event, all participants want to show that everybody is questioned to change living habits and accommodate with nature.

In this world, there are many degrees of poverty, and many of us will never comprehend why in this day and age, poverty and hunger are still around, even in our backyards – in countries that are well-developed. There are many people going to bed hungry every day, and some are even lucky if they have a bed.

Poverty can be found all over the world, it is not just for poor countries, although these countries happen to have a higher percentage of hunger and food insecurity in the world compared to other more developed countries.
Poverty statistics say that 25,000 people die every day of hunger. This figure is mind blowing when you think about it.

Dying of hunger is something that many people cannot wrap their minds around the concept. With so many charities, food for the poor programs, and so much help that is being sent overseas, this problem continues.
Hunger seems to be tied to poverty, and to combat one you have to combat the other. Education plays a big role on this, as the public has to be aware of the problem so agencies can keep helping.

In addition, education is needed in the countries that suffer from poverty, so people can take a proactive role in fighting their own poverty. How do people care when they are so hungry that their main focus is to find something to eat? This is the reason that these three issues Poverty, Hunger, and Education go hand in hand along with the many programs in place.

For these programs to be effective, these three issues have to be tackled together. Otherwise, we are just going in circles and we will not be able to fight hunger and poverty, make food insecurity disappear at last, and have the most effective food for the poor programs in place.

Monday, German President Horst Köhler resigned from his position. With his wife at his side, an emotional Köhler announced, “”I declare my resignation from the office of president — with immediate effect.”

Köhler’s quit leaves a vacuum that will add even more to Angela Merkel’s growing political worries, in between of criticism over a lack of decisive leadership, and a four-year low rating for her government in opinion polls.

Surprise Visit to Afghanistan Leads to Surprise Resignation

Horst Köhler ‘s surprise resignation follows heated criticism of his recent statements about the war in Afghanistan. During a May 22 visit to German soldiers in Afghanistan, Köhler told a reporter, “A country of our size, with its focus on exports and thus reliance on foreign trade, must be aware that … military deployments are necessary in an emergency to protect our interests — for example when it comes to trade routes, for example when it comes to preventing regional instabilities that could negatively influence our trade, jobs and incomes.”

Many interpreted the German President’s remark as a justification of war to protect economic interests, reigniting the controversy over Germany’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan.

Declining Political Power of the German President.

Though the Presidency is a high office, the duties are mostly ceremonial. Köhler received high marks in his first term for his strong speeches pushing for economic reform. However, his reputation as a public speaker suffered a sharp decline after the resignation of his press spokesman.

Karl-Rudolf Korte, one of the leading political scientists in Germany, suggested that it was not Köhler’s controversial comment alone that led to the surprise resignation. Korte explained that Köhler’s decision to resign might have been based largely on his declining influence.

Christian Wullf might take Horst Köhler´s Place

In yesterday´s news, the German government announced that they want suggest Christian Wulff, the current state premier of Lower Saxony, to be the follower of Horst Köhler. He accepted his nomination and thinks of the office of president “a great duty, with great responsibility“.

The current public debt in Germany is the reason for many controversial discussions in the German parliament during the last days. Moreover, some politicians show interests to raise taxes again, though the tax rates in the 16 German federal states are already very high. But a discussion about the unreasonable squanderings of billions of Euros earned through taxes every year does not really take place.

The European currency union decided to form a rescue package for Greece in order to prevent it to go bankrupt. These days, Greece will receive about 14.5 billion Euros bail-out loan which is part of a 110 billion rescue package to stabilize the country and the European currency as well. But more and more Germans start to question, if a state like Germany would be at all able to give away loans facing a tremendous national debt deficit.

Not only Greece is in a very unstable constitution, but also Spain and Portugal are struggling: are there more billion-loans to pay by countries like Germany? The public debt of today will not only mean tax increase in future; there will also follow inflation, i. e. an expropriation people´s assets in other words. Therefore, people are starting to find ways how to prevent their money from getting worthless.

Because of the high German national debt and the billion-high rescue packages carried out by ministers from the European Union, the inflation will be even higher during the next years. That is how European citizens will be punished with a tax increase by a European currency union which was never democratically legitimized by German citizens. And they would even have to pay extra-costs caused by inflation.

Politicians do not seem to be able to save taxes in 2010, so the German Bundestag is discussing about tax increase again. This apparently has become the favourite remedy for a lot of problems now; a lowering of public spending has never really come to their mind.
